Our latest Chocolate Storytime was a vibrant celebration of courage, creativity, and community values. With inspiring stories, engaging activities, and meaningful reflections, the event brought families together to explore bravery, self-expression, and the importance of doing the right thing.
The day’s theme was beautifully set by celebrity guest storyteller Lesley Hunter-Fiorillo, reigning Mrs. Pasadena and 1st runner-up to Mrs. California United States 2018. Lesley read Jabari Jumps by Gaia Cornwall, a story about conquering fear, and I Am Enough by Grace Byers and Keturah A. Bobo, a powerful reminder of self-worth. Fluent in English and French, Lesley captivated the audience with her expressive readings and shared her inspiring journey as a classically trained pianist, entrepreneur, and advocate for the arts.
“Reasons I Like to Do the Right Thing” Essay Challenge
Adding depth to the day’s theme, Ms. Betty J. Ford, Chocolate Storytime’s Program Coordinator Extraordinaire, launched an essay challenge titled “Reasons I Like to Do the Right Thing.” Open to kids aged 8 to 18, the challenge encouraged participants to list five or more reasons why they like to do the right thing. Selected authors shared their thoughtful and heartfelt entries during the event, giving the audience insight into the importance of personal values and integrity.
To sweeten the experience, Ms. Alice provided chocolate chips for the participants and attendees to enjoy—a small treat to celebrate big ideas.
Magic Milk and Stone Painting
Creative activities rounded out the day’s programming. Alicia Leilani Randall, Chocolate Storytime’s 6th Grade STEAM and Creative Arts Director, led an exciting Magic Milk Science-Art Experiment. Participants used milk, food coloring, and dish soap to create colorful, swirling designs. This simple yet mesmerizing activity combined science and art, teaching children how soap molecules interact with fat molecules in milk to produce vibrant, abstract patterns.
Meanwhile, Ms. Ford guided Girl Scout Troop 4601 in a stone-painting activity. The scouts painted beautiful designs on stones, which they then presented to Mrs. Pasadena, Lesley Hunter-Fiorillo, as a gesture of appreciation. This creative moment highlighted the collaborative spirit of the event and showcased the Girl Scouts’ dedication.
Music and Special Guests
The event’s ambiance was further elevated by the musical talents of violinist Amber Daughtery, who plays with the Inner City Youth Orchestra (ICYOLA), whose elegant performance provided a soothing and inspiring backdrop.
The day also welcomed prominent community figures, including Delano Yarbrough, President of the NAACP Pasadena Branch, who engaged with attendees and emphasized the importance of cultural and educational programming. New branch manager Melvin Racelis introduced patrons to the library’s extensive resources, encouraging families to explore all that their local library has to offer.
A Collaborative Celebration
The success of Chocolate Storytime was a testament to the talents and teamwork of its organizers. Ms. Betty J. Ford curated and orchestrated the day’s talent and activities with her signature creativity and expertise, while Alicia Leilani Randall brought hands-on excitement to the crafts and science portion of the event.
For those curious about the science behind the Magic Milk experiment, here’s a quick explanation: When dish soap is added to milk, the soap molecules bond with fat molecules, creating millions of tiny movements that cause the colors to swirl and mix. This fun activity demonstrated how science and art can combine to create something beautiful and unexpected.
A Day to Inspire
Chocolate Storytime continues to inspire and connect our community with its blend of storytelling, creativity, and learning. From Lesley Hunter-Fiorillo’s heartfelt readings to the thought-provoking essays and hands-on crafts, the event encouraged children and families to think big, act courageously, and value the importance of doing the right thing. Stay tuned for more events that celebrate the best of community, creativity, and connection!
