The holidays are here and we wanted kids to embrace and value their naturally kinky, curly, and coily tresses, so we read stories all about hair!

A panelist of moms shared anecdotes promoting healthy hair-esteem and some of their hair styling and detangling routines. Visitors received the guide, “Decode Your Coils,” which includes various hair typing systems that are useful when matching products with hair textures.

Master stylist and owner of Pasadena’s Strandz Hair Studio, Tonya Fairley, also known as the “Hair Whisperer,” demonstrated natural hair care techniques and shared tips about best products and accessories for all curly hair types.

There was a kids’ hair-fashion show that highlighted stylish dos and protective styles.

The Armory Center facilitated a hair-friendly craft, and there was poetry, music, dance, and chocolate treats. Girls were encouraged to wear their natural hair along with their favorite outfit with a touch of African print. Kids 3-12 walked down the “runway” to show off their frohawks, poofy puffs, cornrows, and other fabulous natural hair styles just in time for the holidays.

Shimika Gaskins, executive director of the Children’s Defense Fund, read a poem about hair.

Washington STEAM Magnet Academy principal, Ms. Shannon Malone, talked about her journey with growing her long and beautiful dreadlocks.  After, she read the book, “Maggie Sinclair, Will You Please Fix Your Hair?”  The little ones loved your reading of the book.  At one point near the book’s end, Ms. Malone teared up because she could relate to the story.
